Walk, cycle and run from Cornwall’s clay country.
Ennal’s Pool sits close to the Eden Project and the Clay Trails, making it a natural base for days on foot or two wheels and for exploring Cornwall further afield.
Walking and cycling around St Austell and Eden.
The landscape around Trethurgy, St Austell and the Eden Project is threaded with paths and former industrial routes. The Clay Trails are the obvious place to start: traffic-free and off-road sections pass through the china-clay landscape, linking woods, villages, viewpoints and Eden. They suit anything from a short family walk to a longer day out by bike.
For visitors bringing bikes, walking boots or trail shoes, Ennal’s Pool offers something different from a conventional coastal base: woodland and water at home, with central Cornwall within easy reach.
Trail running and the Eden Marathon.
The Eden Project’s Marathon and Half-Marathon return on 18 October 2026, with multi-terrain courses through the surrounding countryside. It gives runners a good reason to make a weekend of a visit rather than simply arriving for race morning.
Outside race weekend, the Clay Trails offer varied running country around St Austell and Eden.
From the south coast to the Camel Estuary.
Days out can stretch west towards Truro and north-west towards Newquay, while Wadebridge and Padstow give access to one of Cornwall’s best-known traffic-free routes. The Camel Trail runs for about 18 miles between Wenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow on a largely level former railway route. The Wadebridge-Padstow section follows the Camel Estuary and works particularly well as a relaxed cycle or long walk.
That gives a useful mix for a longer Cornwall break: the clay landscape and Eden close by, Truro, Newquay and the north coast, then Padstow and Wadebridge for the Camel Trail and estuary.
Seven good reasons to go in almost any direction.
A deliberately unranked guide to beaches, surf, walks, pasties, pubs, rainy days, fishing ports, restaurants, ice cream, wildlife and woods.
Coming up at Eden.
A small live window onto upcoming events at the Eden Project.
Make the activity part of the break.
Ennal’s Pool is a rustic lake-and-woodland stay near the Eden Project. For walkers, cyclists and runners, that means coming back from a day out to water, trees and wildlife - and being well placed to head in a different direction the following morning.
